How Bow Access Works
For ranged, you need to make an ash shortbow with a fletching bench, and then also craft arrows.
The early route starts while exploring: pick every flax plant you see. You should get seeds from this, and it will also unlock the spinning wheel for you.
Set up one or two ash farming spots at your base and plant those flax seeds, because coarse thread becomes a bit of a bottleneck in the early game.
Getting ahead by farming flax helps in the long run, and then you can craft yourself an ash bow and some arrows.
You are only really going to need 33 arrows, so just make one set. Fang arrows are ideal if you have already picked up a few kebbit fangs, but regular arrows are just fine.
Ranged has received ongoing attention: Ranged skill tree abilities including Hunter Sense, Spectral Arrow and Snare Skill Spells were added, along with poison, barbed and flaming arrows for poison, bleed and fire damage, and enchanted bolts for Crossbows including the Blurite Crossbow.
New bow items include the Magic Longbow and the Magic Shortbow.
Spectral Arrows' duration has been increased to 5 Minutes.
Ranged ammo drops will once again magnetize to the player as intended.
The Bow of Elidinis can no longer use Bleed, Poison and Fire Arrows.
Ranged is firmly in the sights for extra attention in coming updates between now and the release of Luminance this winter.
